The Once – Departures

4/5

St.John’s, Newfoundland natives The Once are back with their third album release Departures, and once again prove to be leaders in the Canadian folk scene. The trio bring together three-way harmonies, lead by Geraldine Hollett and backed by Andrew Dale and Phil Churchill, with hints of country and folk rock.

With lyrics full of character, and fun polka qualities, “The Nameless Murderess” is a hidden gem on the album.

The Once even cover Elvis Presely‘s “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, and do so beautifully.

Folk-ballad “Sonny’s Dream” concludes the album with passion and sans instrumentals. The 5-minute, a cappella track is the cherry on top of a well-constructed album.
