Spencer Burton – Don’t Let the World See Your Love

4/5

First there was Attack in Black, followed closely by Grey Kingdom. Now, the singer-songwriter has embraced his true identity: Spencer Burton. The Canadian punk/rock/acoustic/folk musician has released his latest work Don’t Let the World See Your Love, a collection of graceful and elegant folk songs.

Starting off with the twangy, country-folk track “Death of Gold”, Burton shows off his banjo-style plucking (and actual banjo playing), accompanying his smooth, yet rustic vocals.

“Diamond” was the first single to be released from the solo album, and a gift in itself. Tying together the best aspects of acoustic music: piano, acoustic guitar, and somber vocals, the love song is a beautiful example of Burton‘s talent.

Experimenting with different levels of dynamics and sound, “Don’t Let the World See Your Love” is dramatic and deep. Spencer Burton drops to the lowest octave in his vocal range, and clones himself in the chorus for a unique audio experience.

With the cooler temperatures approaching and the colours changing, Don’t Let The World See Your Love fits well with the season, with comforting melodies and vocals across different tracks. The second half of the album has a number of excellent songs, such as the poetic “Grey Kingdom”, the winter-esque “A Body is All She Ever Let Me Hold”, or the haunting “Blackbird’s Song”.
