Run the Jewels – RTJ2

4/5

El-P and Killer Mike have been making music together since 2012, featuring each other on their respective work and collaborating together. In 2013, they decided to join forces and form Run the Jewels.  The duo are now on to their sophomore album, keeping their hands stuck in a gun and fist position for RTJ2.

Killer Mike hypes up the album in the interlude of the first track Jeopardy, but the album really takes off on the second track “Oh My Darling Don’t Cry with bass-pumping, electronic-infused beats produced by El-P, and skull-crushing rap verses from both.

The thumping ensues with “Blockbuster Night: Part 1, and the aggressive lyrics pump fuel into the track, with lines like “Top of the morning / my fist to your face is fucking Folgers”.

Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck) keeps the energy cranked to 11, and features Zack De La Rocha for a few verses; trigger-happy rapping and mind-rattling production give your repeat button a workout.

Cocky, dynamic and hyperactive, “Lie, Cheat, Steal is a prime example of contemporary hip-hop: quick-release verses, electronic beats, and a catchy chorus hook.

Run the Jewels take their hip-hop beats to another dimension featuring Travis Barker on the track “All Due Respect. The unmistakable, melodic percussion of Barker combines with the unstoppable producing of El-P for a high-flying hip-hop track.

Bringing the album to a close, “Angel Duster is a hypnotic and synth-filled track, settling the dust on the in-your-face album that is RTJ2.
