Sights & Sounds From CityFolk Festival: September 17, 2015

Ottawa, boring? Never.

Thursday evening saw an exciting lineup at CityFolk with a small handful of artists performing, drawing crowds to enjoy the warm weather and likes of Walk Off the EarthLes Soeurs Boulay, and The Avett Brothers, plus those fortunate enough to make the capacity for at the Ravenlaw stage were able to take in the music of Wintersleep.

In case you missed the performances, K.NE was there to capture the concerts.

Les Soeurs Boulay

Sisters Stephanié and Mélanie Boulay grew up in the Gaspé area of Quebec; a small, quaint, and beautiful peninsula town, they moved to Montreal to pursue their career as musicians. The singer-songwriter pair brought their Francophone songs and glowing enthusiasm to CityFolk to commence the night.

Their latest album “4488 de L’Amour” comes out October 19th, but you can visit their website for more music, and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Walk Off the Earth

Vocal harmony-oriented covers of popular pop songs was the captivating course towards fame for Walk Off the Earth. The Canadian pop group took over the internet with their unique cover of Goyte’s “Somebody I Used to Know”, and after piling around the guitar (which is also pictured below), their success took off. Recently releasing “Sing It All Away” back in June, the five-piece are touring more of their original work along with a few popular covers (for example, the Goyte-Avicii-medley they whipped out).

You can find them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Visit their website for more updates!

The Avett Brothers

Keeping the family spirit rolling, North Carolina brothers Scott and Seth Avett, along with multi-instrumentalists Bob Crawford and Joe Kwon took over the main stage at CityFolk, delivering a powerfully engaging and high-energy performance that brought in numerous fans singing along to songs old and new. Their most recent album Magpie and the Dandelion was released almost two years ago, and it has been even longer since the band made an appearance in Ottawa. Nevertheless, the long awaited return was filled with tight-knit musicianship and raw, profound energy brought out through a banjo, double bass, violin, and more.

Stay up to date with their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and visit their website for more music.

Wintersleep

As soon as The Avett Brothers finished on the main stage, festival goers rushed to make the capacity limit at the indoor Ravenlaw stage. JUNO award winning group Wintersleep closed off the evening on a strong note, playing to an excited and lively crowd. Regulars to the nation’s capital, fans knew all the words, singing along to the favourites. Their last release was Hello Hum in 2011, but the band has announced a new album is on the horizon.
