Royal Canoe – Somersault (Official Music Video)

Royal Canoe - Somersault

It has been almost three full years since Winnipeg indie art-rock sextet Royal Canoe released their rhythmically stunning debut Today We’re Believers, and they’ve spent that time performing their oddly captivating music around the world. After playing over 200 shows since 2013, Royal Canoe found time to write and record new music for their recently announced sophomore Something Got Lost Between Here and the Orbit. Set to hit shelves September 16th, the band have shared the first taste of what is to come with the new music video for their lead single “Somersault”.

Although their sound has always revolved around the rhythmic power of percussion and the sonic flexibility of vocals, Royal Canoe have set their focus even closer to those elements on Something Got Lost Between Here and the Orbit. “Somersault” is a clear sign of that with a groovy bass line as a foundation that plays perpendicular to the tic-tac-toe of the band’s dual-drum set up and lead singer Matt Peter’s crisp, signature vocals.

To match the band’s feel good sound, the new music video makes sure to drench the track with colour and fun choreography, sharing similarities to creativity of early-career Ok Go.

Peters had this to say about the music video:

“When you’re creating something, the end result is pretty much all anyone else sees or hears. But running invisibly underneath the finished product are all of the hours you spent in your bedroom struggling to find the right melody, or the planning that went into executing an idea correctly. This behind-the-scenes work and even the abandoned ideas that never go anywhere have their own value, especially to the artist, and they often bring as much to the story as the polished result.”
