Said the Whale – Step Into the Darkness

After announcing a 2017 tour and album a few weeks back, Vancouver indie folk-turned-pop band Said the Whale are keeping their promise with their new lead single “Step Into the Darkness”. With a few surprise changes in the lineup, in this case the five-piece slimmed down to a trio, Said the Whale have shifted their sound as well, embracing a heavier electronic presence, tied with a bow of sugary vocal harmonies from both original frontmen Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft. The new single was written when Worcester was going through a difficult time: “Step…

Andy Shauf – The Magician (Official Music Video)

(If you like: Dan Mangan, Bahamas, The Barr Brothers)  The music of Regina singer-songwriter Andy Shauf is calming, melancholic, and borderline depressing. And aside from its slow-burning qualities, it digs its way deep into the mind and soul, sitting comfortably within as it takes your attention without you noticing. His latest single “The Magician” does it very carefully; a guiding bass line, sporadic fuzzy guitar lines, and swelling instrumentation only further Shauf’s gentle, and dreary vocal delivery. Off his upcoming record The Party out May 20, “The Magician” is given an additionally mesmerizing…

Walrus – Wearing It (Official Music Video)

(If you like: Thee Oh Sees, Ducktails, Bright Light Social Hour) Halifax psych-rock lo-fi outfit Walrus are currently finishing up a stint of tour stops in support of fellow East Coast alternative group Wintersleep (check out the gallery from their Ottawa show here). Adding to their busy lives, Walrus will be releasing their latest EP Goodbye Something later this year. From the forthcoming collection is the low-light, psychedelic hit “Wearing It”. Full of fuzzy distortion, dizzying melody, and undeniable groove, the Halifax band keep the best for last, holding off on the high-energy…

Dan Mangan + Blacksmith – Forgetery (Official Music Video)

Juno-winning singer-songwriter Dan Mangan along with his band Blacksmith released the stunning album Club Meds last January, landing a spot in our Top 50 Albums of 2015. Off the record was the heart-felt, pensive single “Forgetery”. A year later, Mangan and his team have shared the music video/short-film for the track, which stars Rainn Wilson as a character in one of the video’s vignettes. In an interview with Line of Best Fit, Mangan explains the song’s meaning: “My great aunt Margie used to say, ‘My memory is shot, but my forgetery is very sharp.’…

Hundred Waters – Show Me Love (Skrillex Remix) ft. Chance the Rapper, Moses Sumney, Robin Hannibal

(If you like: Alt-J, Jamie xx, Braids)  From one of the best albums of 2014, “Show Me Love” is the gorgeous, poetic a cappella track from Florida art rock trio Hundred Waters off their sophomore release The Moon Rang Like A Bell. Lead singer Nicole Miglis’ delicate vocals struck deep with pioneer producer Skrillex and he has since released his remix, adding in instrumentals and a slew of contributors to the track, including Chicago MC Chance the Rapper, arrangements by Robin Hannibal, and added vocals from Moses Sumney Although Skrillex is a leading…

Hedley – Lose Control (Official Music Video)

(If you like: Walk the Moon, DNCE, Nick Jonas) Canadian pop sensations Hedley released their sixth, gold album Hello back in November, and now Jacob Hoggard and his band have shared the wild and crazy music video for the album’s lead single “Lose Control”. As synth-pop and nu-disco have easily become the latest craze in pop music, “Lose Control” fits the bill, with colourful, synth-driven melodies and Hoggard’s familiar energetic vocal delivery.  The video plays with different studio spaces as dancers, changing lights, and moving crumpled paper interact with Hoggard. Enjoy the clip below,…

The Range – Copper Wire

The number of videos that can be found on YouTube is nothing short of overwhelming. With hundreds of YouTube stars taking front and centre, there are numerous artists that are hiding in the dark, untouched shadows of the internet’s biggest video collection. New York electronic artist James Hinton (a.k.a. The Range) searched through the dusty edges of YouTube to find unknown and untouched talent for his latest project Potential and the accompanying mini-documnetary Superimpose. Having already released a number of singles from the full-length out this Friday, The Range has shared his latest endeavour…

Cage the Elephant – Cry Baby (Official Music Video)

(If you like: Band of Skulls, Crash Kings, The Heavy)  Touring is one of the best parts of being in a band. Seeing the world while performing to a different audience every night is the closest thing to “living the dream” without winning the lottery. Kentucky alternative rock group Cage the Elephant recently finished up a European tour stint, and have collected some of the memories from their trip into the latest music video for “Cry Baby”. Off their latest record Tell Me I’m Pretty, “Cry Baby” is a groovy, ’60s-rock track that…

Interview with Frank Turner: March 12, 2016

All hopped up on nerves and coffee, I arrived at the Bronson Centre precisely 30 minutes early for my interview with folk-punk icon Frank Turner. I figured the extra time would give me a chance to get the obscene fan-girling out of my system and mentally prepare myself before meeting one of my greatest musical inspirations – but nothing prepares you for that. If you, like me, know all the words to “Recovery” and felt a deep personal connection to “The Fisher King Blues”, or have never heard the name…
