The Flatliners – Nerves EP

Toronto punk band The Flatliners have been around for quite some time, making loud, melodic, punk rock since for the past decade – and they’re barely in their mid-20’s. Their ska-beginnings with their 2005 debut Destory to Create eventually shifted into melodic punk rock, and since then they’ve released a handful of hard-hitting, repeat-button smashing records. Adding to their continued success, the four friends have recently signed to Dine Alone Records and have now put out a two-track EP / 7″ Nerves. “Hang My Head” and “Mud” show the band have not changed much over…

In No Particular Order: October 21, 2016

Have you ever started walking one way, and then suddenly realize you’re going the wrong way? Of course you have…But do you take out your phone and pretend you just received a text, and then turn around, or do you just walk the other way? I personally like to swing my leg around and rotate dramatically and continue walking. Speaking of new directions, this week’s In No Particular Order has nothing to do with changing orientation, and instead has three standout albums from artists who are continuing to find success in their…

Jim Guthrie & JJ Ipsen – Aspect Imaginarium

The music of singer-songwriter/composer Jim Guthrie is often described as optimistic, insightful, and charming; which definitely explains his continued work conjuring up encompassing music for film, commercial, and video game soundtracks. His latest endeavour is the soundtrack for roller coaster creation game Planet Coaster inspiringly titled You, Me, and Gravity: The Music of Planet Coaster. The 16-track collection has Guthrie joining forces with multi-instrumentalist JJ Ipsen, blending together their creativity and imagination through folk-rock tunes. Leading the way is the glowing, inspiring single “Aspect Imaginarium”. Warm guitar layers, an engaging piano track, a glowing…

Austra – Utopia (Official Music Video)

Some fear the future, others embrace it. Regardless, all of us envision some sort of way of being down the road. For Toronto synth-pop act Austra, the future has no boundaries, a theme explored on their upcoming release Future Politics. Frontwoman Katie Stelmanis explains, “[Future Politics] is a commitment to replace the approaching dystopia. Not just hope in the future, but the idea that everyone is required to help write it, and the boundaries of what it can look like are both fascinating and endless. It’s not about ‘being political’, it’s about reaching…

The Uh-Huhs – Wrong Young Lady (Official Music Video)

Little Rock, Arkansas is home to the lo-fi indie garage rock act The Uh Huhs, a group of four friends channelling the fuzzy energy of garage rock and punk, as they create songs about what they know best: “being young and dumb and confused by love, sex, and stuff like that”. Their latest single “Wrong Young Lady” captures the surf-rock dynamic with their own punchy style, as they bring up their young-dumb-confused-by-love habits. Between the catchy hooks, toe-tapping, head-banging rhythms, and smooth-meets-growl vocals, The Uh Huhs put the worries behind them as best…

Escapists – Silence

After making their way onto satellite radio stations and touring with Imagine Dragons, London indie rock group Escapists are capitalizing on their ability to build exhilarating tracks from layers of dynamic instrumentation and thought-provoking lyrics. Their 2014 debut Only Bodies found some extra momentum in the indie music world, and now with their latest single “Silence”, the U.K. four-piece are making some more noise. With a space-filling similarity to Young the Giant, and sweeping vocals comparable to the Zolas, Escapists layer together heavy-weighted synths, powerful percussion, and expansive guitar effects for a balanced,…

Tancred – Pens (Official Music Video)

Formed as the brainchild of Now, Now guitarist Jess Abbott, Tancred is the irresistible indie pop-grunge trio based out of the New England area. Blending together singer-songwriter, grunge, lo-fi, and most of all pop, Abbott and her crew deliver loud, catchy tunes that worm their way into your mind and stay there. Her new record Out of the Garden hit shelves back in April, but from the release comes the latest single “Pens”. Although it was released back in September, the song’s infectious hook and energy is not to be missed. Contrasting against the fuzzy guitars…

DNCE – Body Moves (Official Music Video)

After their delicious funk-pop single “Cake By the Ocean” took the world by storm last summer (and counting), DNCE are gearing up to release their debut full-length this fall on November 18th. Their 2015 SWAAY EP took over the radio and internet with the handful of hits last year, and their upcoming self-titled LP should be no different. From the new release is the seductive pop track “Body Moves” and its equally steamy video. With frontman Joe Jonas at the helm, the new music video combines professional shots with playful handheld snippets of…
