Teenage Kicks – Spoils of Youth
4/5
Toronto’s Teenage Kicks are a growing hometown favourite; with their intensity and ability to create momentus rock hooks.
The opening track “Brooklyn Bridge” is a solid starting point, with a slow intro, and a loud finish, setting their debut album on the right foot. Keeping the album moving forward, “Cruse Words” shows the duo’s musical power. Right through the rest of the record, each track keeps up with the others, slamming together energetic percussion, defining chorus lines and addictive guitar riffs. “Houdini” is another solid example from the album.
The band originally started as a 5-piece, but soon the supporting members left Teenage Kicks and only the two brothers Jeff and Peter van Helvoort remained. Nevertheless, the van Helvoorts held their own and unleashed every last bit of their talent into Spoils of Youth. The result? A crowning summer rock album.

(As a side note, they are also big fans of The Beatles and do a pretty solid cover of “Helter Skelter“)
