Gruff Rhys – American Interior
3.5/5
History lessons don’t often accompany new music, or at least not as explicitly and interactively as Gruff Rhys‘ new album American Interior. Welsh explorer John Evans explored America in the 18th century, and is most famous for producing an early map of the Missouri River. He’s also a (very) distant uncle of Gruff Rhys. His extremely great-uncle was the inspiration for the album, giving Rhys the idea to make a film, book, phone app, and album.
Surprisingly, the album doesn’t disappoint. (You would think with a film, book, app AND album there is going to be something that will fall behind, but fortunately the music isn’t it).
The songs and the film go hand in hand, with each music video providing a visual experience. With tracks such as “American Interior”, “100 Unread Messages” and “The Wheter (Or Not), the album is a modern take on American Folk and even makes American history (almost) more interesting.
