Sam Smith – In the Lonely Hour
4/5
Sam Smith, or should I say Sam “Smooth” Smith, has released his first solo album, and that is the best term to describe it: smooth.
His rise in popularity came after being featured on Disclosure‘s hit “Latch” (which he does an acoustic version of on his new album – exceedlingly well I might add). His crooner style vocals and passionate instrumentals are the perfect ingredients for a contemporary R&B album.
The opening track “Stay With Me” seem to match the musical passion of Macklemore x Ryan Lewis song “Same Love” with resonating, dramatic piano parts and an harmonious chorus of voices.
“I’ve Told You Now” carries a slightly old school ambience of soulful pop, but the chorus is irresistible and will be guaranteed to linger in your memory for awhile after.
And if you’re insistent on his sound with Disclosure, the song “Reminds Me of You” can statisfy that craving.
His expressive singing could easily stand on it’s own; the accompanying music merely a bonus.
