Memory Map – The Sky As Well As Space
5/5
Memory Map released their debut album back in 2011, and now, 3 years later, they have returned with their sophomore album The Sky As Well As Space.
They continue to take their indie guitar-pop sound to new heights and new techniques. The band admits their creative process is a little unusual, explaining that they don’t write songs, but rather write song pieces that they eventually put together like “lego, but without following the instructions”.
Bassists/vocalist Mike Dixon works with drummer Josh Morrow on rhythm and drums together, then guitarists Mike Bridavsky and Matt Tobey create melodies and hooks seperately. Once everything comes together, Dixon ad-libs lyrics for the songs, and then records them later.
“It’s really fun to see: ‘Oh we came up with that, and no one ever wrote it — we all wrote little pieces.’ And then it’s cool to hear we have a pop song, and it’s catchy, and you can sing along to it. But really, it’s all a bunch of bullshit.” (Spin.com)
Call it what you want, at the end of the day it’s an impressive work of catchy and skillful indie pop tunes.

P.S. Mike Bridavsky is the proud owner of Lil BUB – a cat with his own show. (Who doesn’t love a cat who can’t control his tongue?)
