The Bug – Angels & Devils
4.5/5
London, England based The Bug has unleashed a new album that is both hypnotically dense and antagonisingly powerful. Angels & Devils is a work of contrasts, textures and percision.
“Void” starts off the album with the instant black-and-white blend of highs and lows. The vocals of Grouper’s Liz Harris can be heard in the shadows of the track, giving the song another dimension.
The first half of the album may be titled Angels, but the industrial dub tracks are soft, yet apprehensive, as if the “angels” are not as they seem.
The following track “Fall” featuring copeland is dark and mysterious, with the deep, heavy bass supporting the light, whispery vocals of copeland.
The dub-heavy track “Mi Lost“ is a melangé of industrial electronic roots and reggae vocals courtesy of Miss Red.
Ringing organs and haunting undertones, “Pandi” is the transition from Angels to Devils, forming an instrumental image of transformation.
The aggressive sound of industrial comes through loud and clear with “The One”, with intense pulsations and a high BPM. Flowdan is hard at work on the track, with his fast pace rapping adding to the ambiance. Similarly, “Function” is heavy and dynamic track that bleeds dark emotions, and plays with the listener through builds and drops.
Death Grips make a hostile and rough appearance on the album with the track “Fuck a Bitch“, which sounds like you would expect: loud and invasive.
Flowdan makes a second contribution on Devils, crawling through with deep bass and slithering vocals in “Fat Mac“.
“Fuck You“ is an in-your-face attack of distorted highs and angry lyrics vocalized by Warrior Queen.
Flowdan finishes off the album with his third appearance on the album with the appropriately titled “Dirty”. The grungy side of dub is revealed in the last song rust-covered beats and vibrating bass that shakes off the grime and dust of the underground.
