Stars – No One is Lost
4/5
Montreal is known for its luscious list of indie rock talent and influence; name any Canadian artist, and there is most likely a dot connecting them to the beautiful city. One band that goes hand-in-hand with the Quebec metropolis is Stars, and the indie pop veterans have released their seventh studio album No One is Lost.
Flirtatiously playing with dancing and disaster, the album opens with “From the Night“, the first single to be shared from the album, and a perfect start to the collection. Pulsating synthesizers, contrasting against the regal vocals of Torquil Campbell & Amy Millan, and the disco-dance beat backing the track, mash together causing the chorus “I don’t care if we never come back from the night” to become firmly planted in your head.
“This is the Last Time” hits closer to the original Stars’ sound from their breakthrough album Set Yourself on Fire, with Millan’s vocals leading the way. The heavy use of synthesizers for the chorus, and melodic bass lines in the verse create a quality flashback.
The soft and swift “No Better Place” showcases Millan’s serenading abilities, with support from chiming piano chords and an electro-pop finale. Campbell takes his turn with the melodramatic track “What Is To Be Done?”
“Are You OK?” adds a little more rock to the album, with indie rock instrumentation met with supporting synthesizers, and with Millan’s vocals, it’s easy to compare it to fellow Montreal band Metric.
The title track ends off No One is Lost with a dance twist, filtering out any acoustic instruments, and replacing them with their electronic counterparts. As a fun finale, “No One is Lost” makes up for some of the B-side tracks.
No One is Lost may not be the band’s best album, but it is definitely some of their best work.
