Mystery Skulls – Forever
3.5/5
Sometimes looking back in a career is a favourable move, with some of the best music occurring in an early stage for an artist. For Luis Dubuc, looking back could result more in embarrassment than celebration as the man behind electro-pop act The Secret Handshake (“Summer of ’98“ anyone?). Fast-forward to 2014, Dubuc has begun to pave a solid road of success as his current indie electro-pop journey Mystery Skulls with the debut album Forever.
The title track kick starts Forever with bass thumping groove and neo-disco momentum, giving the Dallas-native a fantastic first impression for his latest studio work. Allowing the energy to carry over, “The Future” follows close behind, doused in vibrancy and quality production.
Originally released back in 2012 on the Mystery Skulls debut EP, “Paralyzed“ was lined with rough and raw bass-filled synthesizers. Polished and remastered, the track now features sharper and smoother pulsating synthesizers, and an undeniable Daft Punk influence.
The winning streak continues with the fourth track “Hellbent“; heavy with house and electronic dance music influences, the song is catchy and booms with trance-liked excitement.
Finding a mix between Chromeo and Calvin Harris, “Ghost“ is a fun, neo-soul style track, and just in case you were curious, the music video shows what an exorcism would be like to his music. “Ghost” switches gears just in time for collaborations with Nile Rodgers and Brandy with two, back-to-back electro-disco party anthems “Magic“ and “Number 1″.
Dubuc keeps the energy level at the top and the dance music on lock for a consistent and highly enjoyable electronic dance album. Buy the album here.
