Michaela May – 1954 (Official Music Video)
(If you like: Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Meghan Trainor)
Most often a pop song is made to entertain, other times it also happens to make a powerful statement. Scottish-born/Toronto-based singer-songwriter Michaela May aims towards the latter option with her new music video for her hit single “1954”.
Directed by Seth Mendelson, the music video is done in one, exhausting single take as makeup is vigorously applied to May’s stern face. With each chorus of “This ain’t 1954”, she looks more and more worse for wear, although her music remains upbeat and powerful. May explains:
“I didn’t want the true meaning of ‘1954’ to be completely lost in a catchy melody and lyrical metaphors, so I knew I had to make a statement…Society often talks about how far women have come, but there are still some fundamental issues that beg the question, is this still ‘1954’? I wanted to create something visually that highlighted this…I wanted to make a video that made a statement about how I feel. I still believe we have a long way to go with societal norms and pressures and hopefully my video will prompt some discussion and thought about how we can move forward…”
