Fast Romantics – Animal (Official Music Video)
(If you like: The Dears, The New Pornographers, Elvis Costello)
After adding singer-songwriter Kirty to the line-up, Calgary/Toronto alternative band Fast Romantics felt complete.
First formed by Matthew Angus and Jeffery Lewis, Angus was looking to solidify the band’s shape and find their footing.
“Kirty was one of the first people I wrote to because I was just captivated by what she was doing…it’s the first time I’ve ever had another songwriter in the band. I’m still writing these songs but Kirty is the counterweight to the whole thing and she’s going to call bullshit on me. She will tell me when things ring false, when the songs don’t reflect me, and I think now the songs are coming from a more genuine place.”
The single “Animal” is one of the first hits that include the latest addition, and after releasing it back in January, the Toronto-based outfit have shared the new music video.
“Animal” was first inspired by a drunken acquaintance who was having little luck one night: “There was some awful narrative to the night with some guy we both knew acting horribly, and it got us talking about base instincts and how certain people act on them while others resist. We actually ended up having a huge argument about it and I woke up the next morning with the song in my head.”
The dizzying effects of layered shots, distortion, and various camera speeds and angles re-creates the illusion of intoxication, as the viewer succumbs to visually-driven stimulation under a chorus of “I know I’m an animal / don’t know right from wrong, but I know what feels good”.
Check out the clip below, and catch Fast Romantics on tour this spring (dates below). “Animal” will be off the band’s upcoming full-length out later this year.
