Weaves – One More
(If you like: Spiral Beach, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Pixies)
Well before the release of their forthcoming debut album, Weaves have been stirring the pot in the lo-fi pop rock scene, generating well-deserved buzz for their infectious, dizzying sound, and their critically-acclaimed live performances. The Toronto quartet popped up on the map in 2014 with their debut EP, with Rolling Stone calling them “a band to watch”. Fast forward to 2016 and the same hardworking, eccentric group of musicians have shared their latest single “One More” and announced a string of tour dates.
Frontwoman Jasmyn Burke explains the band’s direction with “One More”:
“Sometimes I’m bothered by female lyrical content that feels indirect or is only about wanting a certain thing. I think there’s room for women to have a more individual voice in music and to be having fun rather than looking for their next love. It’s ok for it to not be that, and to be more independent. Maybe it’s going out and getting drunk, and it’s not like a fairytale, sometimes its more shitty and pizza and that’s ok! That’s gonna be life for a while!”
The band’s punchy flare and unstoppable energy instantly takes off from the get-go, as Burke’s conscious delivery allows her lyrics to come forward, as the band’s articulate and melodic instrumentation create an ecstatic and colourfully disorientating backdrop.
