Jillian Lake – Oliver (Music Video)
Lake released her debut EP Honey back in 2018, and has been working on her follow-up LP with songwriter/producer Jordan Klassen. From the forthcoming release is her latest single “Oliver”, and its accompanying one-shot music video.
Finding the balance between loneliness and solitude can be a challenging task for the human spirit. Especially after a breakup on Christmas:
“I wrote ‘Oliver’ after one particularly lonely Christmas where I was frustrated with myself for being surrounded by people that loved me but yet consumed by the one person who didn’t. I liked the kind of twisted-ly beautiful idea of someone having so much power over you that even the sound of their name could bring you to your knees”, Lake shares.
And as Lake puts it, every emotion she feels is “BIG”, and her expressiveness is at the heart of her music, especially on “Oliver”.
“To me, [it] is a break up anthem about surrendering to those feelings as they come, recognizing them, letting them pass through, make you ache, even break you, but then not overtake you. You can make the song mean whatever you want it to mean to you. I love feeling BIG. It makes me feel alive and I’m still dancing”.
Inspired by established female songwriters such as FEIST, Maggie Rogers, and Phoebe Bridgers, Lake’s soft vocals caress their way into listener’s ears. Its subtle richness and dream-pop aesthetic adds a welcomed depth overtop a folk-rock guitar melody that builds throughout “Oliver”, as the song’s melancholic roots will surely inspire some internal reflection and sad memories.
The music video has Lake moving through an old bar on karaoke night, as she sips her way through her sorrows. Enjoy the video below, and visit her website for more music.
