Let’s get started!
NOBRO – Don’t Die
With each new releases, Montreal punk four-piece NOBRO are just steamrolling the Canadian punk scene. Their debut EP Sick Hustle is a four track banger of anthemic hooks and catchy riffs with a whole lot of spice. From the releases is “Don’t Die” which, as the band puts it, is “music that we wanted to bump in our 2004 Toyota minivan as loud as we possibly could…”
If you don’t drive a ’04 minivan, you can still try it out with your favourite pair of headphones.
India Shawn – CALI LOVE
Since 2010, India Shawn has been a songwriter for the likes of Chris Brown, Monica, Keri Hilson, and more. With over a decade in the biz, she has officially announced she will be releasing a debut EP later this year alongside a new single “CALI LOVE”.
Naturally, the single is a lush nu-R&B treat rich with SoCal beach vibes and smoke-filled crooning, perfect for those late summer nights that will (hopefully) soon be happening.
(And yes, she is wearing a Swarovski crystal crown made of joints)
Carmanah – Best Interests
Vancouver Island folk-soul group Carmanah have the ability to capture the sounds and energy of the Canadian West Coast with their music. On their new single “Best Interests”, the kick things up a notch, incorporating some more low-tempo rock a-la Black Keys to their breezy sound.
Their sophomore album Iris will be out on June 12th and it should definitely be on your radar.
The Jerry Cans – SOS
As a Canadian, it always exciting to hear music from different parts of the country – especially the North. Music from Iqaluit doesn’t often make its way onto my radar (and perhaps this is the same for you), but today all the changes.
Juno-Nominated indie rock group The Jerry Cans have shared their new single and music video for “SOS”, a song bassit/band leader Brenden Doherty explains, “is about being lost and stuck in a confusing world of emotions and relationships of all kinds”. The accompanying music video features dancer Miambi Kasse as a character experience a release of body and mind through glitchy Boomerang-style clips.
Incorporating throat singing, the fiddle, and accordion into their music, The Jerry Cans turn folk stylings into more cinematic and prog-rock centered music and “SOS” is no exception.
The Airborne Toxic Event – Hollywood Park
With their sixth album Hollywood Park on its way, The Airborne Toxic Event have yet again created something grandiose. Known for their anthemic, arena-sized sound, the L.A.-based group have done it yet again with their new single and title track “Hollywood Park”. For six and a half minutes, its a pummelling alt-rock tune that has a dark story.
Alongside the album, lead singer Mikel Jollett will be releasing his memoir of the same name about being raised in a cult, his journey to overcome abuse throughout his life, and finding his way through music. The single “Hollywood Park” is a just a small look inside his unique story.
Oliver Heldens – Details ft. Boy Matthew
Dutch producer Oliver Heldens is back with another beach party worthy track. “Details” featuring British singer/songwriter Boy Matthew is just another fun track to add to your party playlist.
PHNTMS – Back Burner
Nothing quite like being left on the back burner in someone’s life, amirite?
Philadelphia rock group PHNTMS have turned that feeling of being left to wait on someone else into an electrifying new single “Back Burner” (not to be confused with suntanning on your stomach for too long).
Lead by the explosive vocals of Alyssa Gambino, it is a hard-hitting tune that easily warrants another listen. Hints of Paramore, Flyleaf, and Kings of Leon can be heard influenced into their music.
Plus, half the group identifies as queer, and they hope to reach out to and support the LGBTQA+ community. Drummer Gene Murphy confides, “We openly talk about lesbian relationships in our music and we want to bring hope to anyone who is in the closet and doesn’t feel safe coming out. Whether you are out as queer or not, your identity is valid and if our music helps you escape heteronormativity for a brief moment.”
Float Point – Until the Noise Stops
Ottawa-based producer/songwriter Paolo Pace, also known as Float Point, has shared his new single “Until the Noise Stops”.
The new track is a glitchy, ethereal-pop tune with elements of Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, and Squarepusher mixed in. While some artists leave their vocals to lead the way, Pace’s music is textural driven, giving your headphones a bit of a workout with plenty of layers and substance of electronica bundled underneath.
He shares his new single “is about fighting for your rights in the face of adversity. It’s about the feeling of isolation and indifference that comes from living as a minority in an oppressive reality you can’t escape, but must“.
Marcus King – One Day She’s Here
Marcus King has been making waves with his sensational blend of genres. Funk, blues, country, folk, and soul combine into a retro-style with the timeless element of romance.
His latest single “One Day She’s Here”, off his debut album El Dorado, is an exemplary track of King’s style. Bringing ’50s blues and ’60s R&B into the contemporary world, he can easily compare to Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and Brittany Howard of the Alabama Shakes.
Written about the one that got away, his new music video has King just steps away from the girl of his dreams.
(I mean, can you blame him?)
Alex Nicol – Trust
Montreal-based singer/songwriter dropped his latest album All For Nada back on March 13th. From the LP is his lead single “Trust”, a poignant and poetic slow-burner about the human reservations of broken trust. The single has Nicol’s haunting voice echoed overtop a dreamy riff in true bedroom pop style.
