Happy Sunday!
Welcome to From the Inbox, where I take you through some bonus picks I’ve rounded up from the past week. This edition has a bit of everything – from breakout hip-hop star Kris Yute, to Swedish electronic producer Milwin and Toronto indie pop singer NOA it has something to cure your Quarantine Blues.
As always, don’t forget to follow us across social media. You can find Dusty Organ on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Spotify to stay up to date on new releases. Also, you can find tracks from these albums and more on our Monthly Spotify playlist.
And more importantly, if there’s something you love, remember to share it around!
NOA – Motions
Toronto indie pop songstress NOA has turned her Valentine’s Day breakup track “Motions” into a music video. Her nu-R&B sound helps to bring out the song’s moody vibes as she sings about the stages of a break-up surrounded by sugary cereal.
And in case you were wondering, when asked about the Lucky Fruit Charm Loops in the video, she said she “ate like 4 bowls”.
Milwin – Kill The Lights
Swedish producer Milwin has released a number of singles over the years, mixing together house, EDM, and pop into groovy dance music. His new single “Kill the Lights” showcases his European flare and strength as an upcoming . He certainly has the potential to be amongst names like Calvin Harris and DJ Snake for making chart-topping electronic hits.
You can hear “Kill the Lights” and more of my favourite tracks from the month on my new Starting Line-Up playlist.
No Rome – Hurry Home
London-based/Manila-born songwriter No Rome teamed up with fellow Filipino artists Beabadoobee and Jay Som on his new single “Hurry Home”, once again working with 1975 drummer George Daniel on production. Written about the struggles of a relationship falling apart, “Hurry Home” is a delicate track that builds with synths and acoustic guitar, giving the love song ballad a modern feel.
Roman Rouge – The Other Me
Inspired by the likes of The Weeknd and Majid Jordna, El Paso, Texas artist Roman Rouge aims to create sultry, nu-R&B tracks built around remaining empowered and strong. His new single “The Other Me” is no different, written about “about the importance of being honest and true to yourself and confronting it no matter how uncomfortable or awkward the situation may be”. Futuristic synthesizers and pulsating bass tones gives the song a contemporary feel with inspiration from Michael Jackson and The Weeknd when the falsetto hits.
Sarah Barrios – Mourn The Living
Indie pop songwriter Sarah Barrios made her debut earlier this year with the single “I Didn’t Mean To”. Now, the American songstress is following up with her new single “Mourn The Living”.
Her smokey vocals croon about the ghosts of past relationships and friendships, reminiscing about the memories of people gone from one’s life. “Whether you break up with someone or fall out with a friend, I think it’s natural to mourn the loss of someone’s presence in your life,” Sarah explains. “But there comes a point where you have to accept that, people move on and continue living and growing, and therefore you should too.”
Fans of Bea Miller and Julia Michaels will fall in love with the rising star.
Sleepless Nights – Greatest Hits
Born from the recording studios and basements of Halifax, Nova Scotia Sleepless Nights eventually made the jump to Toronto back in 2017 after reuniting following their disbandment in 2009. Built up of members from A.A. Wallace, Quiet Parade, and Kuato, Sleepless Nights are back and better than ever with their groovy slow-burner “Greatest Hits”, off their new album Every Word Is A Trap.
The accompanying music video was shot over two days in quarantine, creating this uniquely historical sense of longing for freedom from the lockdown. Shot 4:3, the video intends to create a sense of anxiety and confinement as the song’s chorus of “these are our greatest hits” rings overtop. It’s weirdly comforting, uniting together from the safety of solitude while we all slowly sink into madness.
Kris Yute – I Did It
Brooklyn-based/Jamaican-born hip-hop artist Kris Yute released his debut single “I Did It” back in September 2019 and has now shared its animated music video, directed by Lonewolf and starring Penn Badgley.
The slick, Caribbean-inspired track meets its colourful soulmate in the new video with a collage of cutouts from ’60s and ’70s magazines creating psychedelic landscapes and a cameo from Penn Badgley, who posted a video last year of him and Yute dancing to this song.
“I Did It” is the first of many more hits to come.
lovepoint – Caramelise
U.K. multi-insturmentalist/songwriter lovepoint made his debut back in 2018 with his self-titled EP. Following up his release, the British musician has shared his new single “Caramelise”, a sultry, alternative R&B track that layers together the hazy Brit-rock of bands like Oasis and Radiohead with the passionate youthfulness of soulful R&B.
