METZ Leave It All Behind On New Single “A Boat To Drown In”; Announce New LP Atlas Vending
Toronto noise rock band METZ have had a prolific career in capturing the raw, blistering possibilities of distorted guitar riffs and ear-bleeding tenacity. The three-piece have announced they will be releasing their fourth full-length Atlas Vending on October 9th, and have shared the ferocious 8-minute lead single “A Boat To Drown In”.
On the upcoming album, the band delve into a cluster of heavy subjects like paternity, crushing social anxiety, addiction, isolation, media-induced paranoia, and the restless urge to leave everything behind. “A Boat To Drown In” focuses in on the latter, exploring the need to escape a bad situation and moving forward. According to METZ’s Alex Edkins, “It is about leaving a bad situation behind. About overcoming obstacles that once held you back, rising above, and looking to a better future. The title refers to immersing yourself fully into what you love and using it as a sanctuary from negativity and a catalyst for change.”
For seven minutes, the song’s reoccurring guitar riff and chorus keeps a steady pulse, creating a looming sense of anxiety for the song’s duration in the style of hardcore post-rock. The repetition of the song’s motif becomes a weighted coldness to it as the band circles back to the mantra of “And if you see headlights, man you better run for cover” on each chorus.
Adding to the song’s intensity is the accompanying music video, directed by Tony Wolski, who aimed to visually enhance the song’s internal struggles. Wolski shares, “The song has a beautiful, crushing numbness to it that we wanted to mirror in the visual. So we chose to romanticize our main character’s descent into her delusions of love and togetherness. At a time when everyone’s simultaneously coping with some sort of isolation, a story about loneliness—and the mania that comes with it—seems appropriate to tell.”
