Be No Rain Makes A Quilt of Memories In New Music Video For “Media Luna”

London-based artist Be No Rain announced he will be releasing his debut full-length Strawberry Backstory on September 18th. The synth-pop artist began to turn heads with his single “All Night, Right?” and its captivating mix of vintage and new, and Sam Frankl, who performs under the moniker Be No Rain, once again opens up the boundaries of his synth-pop songwriting with this new single “Media Luna”.

While the genre of synth-pop and electro-pop is often paired with high energy and dance-hungry beats, Frankl shapes it into a poignant, atmospheric, and bleak sound, exploring themes such as heartbreak, loss, and dread on his upcoming album. “Media Luna” is about the latter, finding a soul-crushing melancholy in his echoing falsetto and dismal piano chords. He explains:

“As the song developed it became more of a generalized study of dread, that kind of non-contingent fear that lives in the realm of dreams. Or even the dread that arises at 6am, stumbling, cold onto an unfamiliar street, blinking in the dawn as a chemical shroud lifts and every passing thought feels altogether too tragic and terrible to comprehend. Nonetheless, what’s left resounding at the end of the song is a sense of hope. Dread is transient and so are we; with or without our misdeeds the world will keep spinning.”

As the world continues to navigate through the ongoing pandemic, the concept of dread has seen more hours this past year. For the song’s music video, director Jacek Zmarz collected 50 VHS tapes from strangers online to quilt together a disparate, parallel universe of memories from a world trapped in uncertain times. The fleetingness of time, memory, and the melancholic nostalgia of home videos come together on “Media Luna” for a soul-touching piece.
