Prog-Metal Group Census Share A Friend’s Traumatic Story With New Single “Sunbeam”
“Sunbeam” is the latest single from modern progressive rock band CENSUS, based out of Jessieville, Arkansas. They have been open about their desire to continuously evolve and mature their sound through creating music with purpose, and the inspiration behind their latest release certainly proves their intent.
Heavy instrumentation, a staple of their genre, brings to light a similarly heavy subject. Taking on the subject of sexual abuse, “Sunbeam” explores a deeply personal story from a friend of vocalist Ben Carey. On their decision to cover such sensitive material, the band says they wanted to address “how common sexual assault is, and we wanted to use this song and story to bring awareness to that.”
From the outset of the song, the lyrics tell the story of a woman who seemingly has it all, and develops throughout to reveal the traumatic events that are at the song’s centre. Focusing on the experiences of a survivor of sexual abuse, who in the present battles depression and mental manipulation, you’ll hear an echo of her internal dialogue through the chorus, as the verses carry listeners through the underlying story. Paired with the accompaniment of members Jathan Neider on bass, Bo Sawyer on guitar, and Josh Coleman on drums, their sound encompasses modern metalcore and 80’s-esque guitar riffs that may bring to mind bands such as Beartooth, Memphis May Fire, and Of Mice and Men.
If nothing else, the intent behind the single rings true: “it’s a real issue and it’s important to acknowledge it, rather than pretend it doesn’t exist“.
