Jillian Lake Stays Strong With New Single “Walk All Over You”
Vancouver emerging artist Jillian Lake started 2020 off strong, releasing two stunning singles “Oliver” and “Bleed Baby Bleed” as a follow-up to her 2018 debut EP Honey. She has been working with acclaimed singer-songwriter Jordan Klassen on her upcoming full-length, and while both previous singles showcased her folk origins, her latest single “Walk All Over You” brings out a darker, synth-pop flavour that has Lake at her most self-assured.
“[It] was written from the perspective of all the people and situations that have taken advantage of my softness and compassion”, she explains. “I wrote it at a time when I felt betrayed and let down by the people around me – I also happened to be watching way too much Animal Planet. Playing with the metaphors of the jungle and the food chain – on how vulnerability is perceived and exposed – this song is my cheekiest response to unveiling what I saw as strength in people, to actually turn out to be selfishness and unawareness“.
With bouncing, repetitive synth rhythms and stripped down beats, “Walk All Over You” is warmly similar to Sylvan Esso. The trip-hop foundation met with Lake’s angelic, velvety vocals makes for a wonderful combination, as she proves to be one of 2020’s rising stars.
