UK Act HOLYGOOD Melt Genres With Electric New Single “Killing Giants”
London genre-bending indie rock group HOLYGOOD (f.k.a. Light You Up) will be returning with their new name and sound on their upcoming EP Killing Giants on January 22, 2021. From the upcoming release is the electronic-infused title track, featuring American producer Tony Humphries.
With a handful of punk-pop-inspired tracks under their belt, “Killing Giants” shifts into a post-genre world of electronic, post-hardcore, and Gen-Z pop rock. About the song, frontman Thomas Napier shares, “The song is essentially about questioning the idea of happiness. It was written whilst I was in a very negative headspace, questioning why I, and in turn others, engage in self-destructive behaviours, in the hope that this will lead us to the impossible destination of happiness”.
He continues, “Happiness is, of course, not a destination, rather a part of the ups and downs of life. The lyric ‘you’re killing giants in your dreams’ is a way of saying ‘your current headspace is destructive’, as to kill something so rare would be an awful thing to do. Your mindset is violently negative and volatile, and in this state, can you really be happy?”
Courtesy of Humphries’ production, “Killing Giants” quickly becomes a wildly expansive track, layering post-rock guitars and effect-laden vocals to ask the question “are you happy now?”.
