Julia Stone Brings Along Matt Berninger On Contemplative New Single “We All Have”
It has been almost eight years since Australian singer-songwriter Julia Stone released her last solo effort By The Horns. To close the gap, she will be releasing her new album Sixty Summers on April 16th, both physically and digitally via Arts & Crafts. Written over the course of five years between 2015-2019, Sixty Summers is a well-rounded collaborative effort with friends Thomas Bartlett, aka Doveman, and Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, to bring out both the spirituality and pop sensibilities of her sound.
Her latest single and video “We All Have” is the album’s most tender piece, working as a warmhearted ballad strengthened by The National’s Matt Berninger.
“This song is about how everything transforms and moves; even though you feel so shitty at one point, it might shift into something new,” says Stone of the inspiration behind the song. “Love is all that we really need to be here for —not love with someone else but love in your heart.”
The song’s reoccurring chorus of “we all have the lightness to be okay, okay, okay for now” is a soothing mantra, brightly lit by Stone’s striking vocal style and rounded out by Berninger’s rich baritone on the final verse.
Contributing to the song’s meditative qualities, the music video takes place on the water off the coast of Tasmania, where director Gabriel Gasparinatos‘ cousin Jesse Gasparinatos is a second-generation Abalone diver. Shot over the course of a week from the small fishing boat, the warm colours of the open sky and the steady rocking of the ocean help to immerse listeners into the tranquil environment.
