NYC Duo Toledo Play With Vulnerability On “Sunday Funday”
NYC Duo Toledo tackle substance abuse in new music video
Toledo – Brooklyn based duo of Daniel Alvarez and Jordan Dunn-Pilz – share their latest single, “Sunday Funday”. Lifelong friends since childhood, the pair moved home to Newburyport, MA once the pandemic hit New York, their studio equipment in tow, and began writing and recording from the attic in Alvarez’s parent’s house. Part of those sessions is “Sunday Funday”.
Tackling the subject of familial alcoholism, and how to navigate it within a new relationship, the personal track is also accompanied by a music video. “Rather than let the weight of the subject matter carry the mood, we focused on the more positive aspects of being a willing support system for someone new in your life,” explains the band. Soft instrumentation blends with lyrics that tell the story of figuring out how to be there for someone new in your life, even as you’re still figuring each other out, and supporting them as they cope with a loved one’s addiction.
A unique perspective into the subject of alcoholism, the emotional topic is coupled with an unexpectedly playful video. Sad but sweet, it serves to bring out the underlying hopeful tone of the single. “We tried to carry over [the positive aspects] in our (very) homemade music video,” they share. “Cute puppet; heavy subject matter. We had a blast making it, but I think we also learned some valuable lessons.” Lead through various everyday scenes impacted by substance abuse by the puppet, the video ultimate ends on a high, and really shows how the track came to be.
“Sunday Funday” is taken off Toledo’s new EP, Jockeys of Love, which dropped this past week, February 12th. Available for streaming in all the usual places, take a first look at the endearing video for “Sunday Funday” below.
