McKinley Dixon Shares His Latest Single “Swangin'” From Upcoming LP
After dropping his phenomenal lead single “Make A Poet Black” earlier this year, Richmond-based rapper McKinley Dixon is making a solid push to have one of the year’s most highly anticipated records. For My Mama And Anyone Who Look Like Her is set to be released on May 7th and Dixon has followed up with his latest heavy-hitting single “Swangin'”.
Produced by friend Josh Letjoux, Dixon was drawn to the new track, saying, “Living in Richmond, this beat Josh made just sounded so Virginia, I had to rap over it. It sort of fills the void of wanting to make a song that had the feel of children banging on a lunch room table.”
The rhythmic and soul-infused beat is an ear-catching foundation for Dixon to share his confident flow as he talks about his experience of being a Black man in America, a common puzzle piece for his upcoming album.
“I think about the messaging, and how this can be a way for another Black person, someone who looks like me, to listen to this and process the past. Everything I’ve learned about communication for this album culminates with this bigger question about time. Is time linear when you’re still healing and processing?” he explains. “Storytelling is time travel, it’s taking the listener to that place. Quick time travel. Magic. These raps I’m making are no different than stories told around the campfire. They elongate the culture.”
