Montreal-based R&B Artist Janette King Shares Honest New Single “You Don’t Love Me”

Edit: May 26, 2021

Montréal-based producer and artist, Janette King, has put out her new single “You Don’t Love Me”, serving as the latest preview of King’s forthcoming debut album, What We Lost out on June 25, 2021, via Hot Tramp Records.

Part of a collection of singles about loss, change, and the acceptance of the unknowing, “You Don’t Love Me” dips into the realm of failing relationships, with King singing about feeling distant from an absent partner. Through ’90s-R&B inspired beats and glossy vocals, she goes through the possibilites of what comes next in the relationship.

Speaking about the new single, King says: “This song was created from my own personal experience of being in a very hot and cold relationship. Continuously questioning if my partner still loved me and always expecting the worst every time we would hang out. It was like being on a rollercoaster. In the end, we broke up and it was for the best because in hindsight it was I who couldn’t fully love them“.

By being honest to herself and her music, King channels her emotions from her experiences on “You Don’t Love Me” and the remainder of What We Lost, diving into complex situations such as the loss of close family members, mental health, and loss of identity. For the accompanying music video, King falls deeper into the ’90s R&B influence with a Fresh Prince-era basketball court dance routine.

Speaking about the self-directed music video, she shares: “The video is an homage to late 90’s/early 2000’s heartthrob movies like Love & Basketball and Poetic Justice. These movies were like a religious artifact for me as a kid, and since the song itself had such a 90’s R&B vibe, I thought that it would only be right to pay my respects in video format. In truth, the whole day just felt like a typical day of hanging with my friends. The story centers around this unsuspecting “basketball guy” who comes to the court out of nowhere, blows everyone away with his skills, and then walks off into the sunset. There are so many sides of me that I explore on this album and for this, I really just wanted to create a video that had a bit of humour in it. The project was a group effort between my friends and I with Rupert Common and Maryze Bernard helping me with the concept and Evan Johnston and the rest of the staff from the Montreal venue, The Diving Bell Social Club, editing and filming.”
