South African Folk Artist Steve Umculo Shares Stunning Visual For “Your Eyes Through Mine”
Johannesburg, South Africa based indie singer-songwriter Steve Umculo has released his new EP Fall From Grace. The collection was written during his time spent in Nashville back in 2019, and Umculo combines his American influences with his South African roots on “Your Eyes Through Mine”, the leading track from the effort.
Keeping with folk music tradition, the song is focused on storytelling, and Umculo and his team wanted to transfer the narrative-driven spirit into the accompanying music video. Inspired by “May I Have This Dance” by Francis and the Lights & Chance the Rapper, Umculo wanted to share his story through dance, bringing along choreographer Sandi Dlangalala.
A domino effect of talent resulted, as Umculo brought on director of photography Gavin Pincus who brought along director Cole Matthews who brought along a talented crew. “It became apparent to me that our final product was going to be my most professional video to date”, Umculo shares, “so I didn’t want to waste it on me prancing around the screen trying to pull off a dance. I decided to bring in the pros and Sandi was a no brainer for the protagonist in this story. He is such a gifted actor and a brilliant dancer. Kiruna-Lind is also a phenomenal talent that I was lucky enough to have in this video. I’ve worked with both of them on production shows before and know they have a great chemistry so having them both on board was a true blessing.”
Using the story of heartbreak as their theme, the music video flips through memories of past romance before shifting into the aforementioned dance scene. Soundtracked by Umculo’s heartfelt and sincere folk stylings, “Your Eyes Through Mine” packs an emotional punch both musically and visually.
“It was such an enlightening experience to watch this gorgeous masterpiece come to life from the other side of the camera. Every team member did such an incredible job and I am so proud of each individual involved in bringing this video to life“, he adds. “Thank you for taking the time to watch this music video. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed producing it.”
