Witch Prophet Celebrates The Ethiopian Queen of Sheba In New Video “MAKDA”
From her 2020 Polaris Music Prize shortlist D.N.A. Activation, genre-melting artist Witch Prophet has shared the new music video “MAKDA”. Directed by Leah Vlemmiks, who worked with Witch Prophet on the video for “TESFAY“, the visual is a celebration of the matriarchy through dance.
“MAKDA” is a celebration of the Ethiopian Queen of Sheba and the power of Black women and mothers told through dance and documentary”, says Vlemmiks. “Made in collaboration with dancer and choreographer, Esie Mensah, “MAKDA” mixes powerful movement with rich visuals that celebrate Witch Prophet’s ancestral history and the women in her life that inspire her.”
Witch Prophet’s slow, jazz-infused sound on “MAKDA” combines a variety of styles, including R&B, dub, and hip-hop. Produced by her wife SUN SUN, the rich and haunting beat is a sturdy foundation for Witch Prophet to let her powerful voice take over with her message. “MAKDA is a song named after my sister as well as the Queen of Sheba. It’s about stepping into your power, as well as the strength, resiliency and beauty of the Black woman,” explains Witch Prophet. “It’s also a reminder to those that try to take advantage of us that we are in charge and always have been.”
