Electro-pop Duo Purity Ring Release First Single Of 2021 With “soshy”

Canadian electro-pop duo Purity Ring have released their first music since spring 2020’s album, womb. “soshy” is also the first release on the group’s own label, The Fellowship. Additionally, the pair of Corin Roddick and Megan James, will be setting off on a world tour starting mid-September this year and into 2022.

‘soshy’ – pronounced so shy – is an otherworldly electronic track, with the synthesized beat overlaid with Megan James’ crisp vocals. The lyrics are fairly ambiguous, but coupled with the instrumentation the song has a haunted feel, fed by vocal stylings outside of the lyrics themselves that add to the more ethereal, dark tones of the track. A bit creepy in all the right ways, the warmth of the melodies highlights the unique quality of Purity Ring’s music, able to merge the two into a captivating piece of music.

Then there’s the visuals. The single’s artwork, done by James,  features an illustrated feminine figure, looking haunted with blood-red eyes, which gives listeners a visual preview into ‘soshy’s’ overall vibe. Added to that is the single’s music video, directed by Carson Davis Brown. Featuring black and white footage and focusing on a young child (identified a sDoris in 1935), there’s an old film/horror feel to the video. With ‘soshy’ playing alongside the footage, everything couples together perfectly into a slightly unsettling but really satisfying release for fans of the band’s work. James describes both the track and the video as “a wraith to descend the summer stairs with.”
