Introducing: Bristol Indie Rock Outfit Kickboy Share Debut Single “Portland From Streetview”
On a damp, drunken Thursday evening at the Bristol bar Thekla, vocalist and bassist Jamie Danish set out to recruit new bandmates. After fishing a number from a girl “who knew someone”, Jamie enlisted drummer Owen Ranson with a belligerent text at 4am, and then the following morning, brought in flatmate Chris Robbs as a lead guitarist.
Organized and in full formation, the indie trio have shared their debut single “Portland From Streetview”, with a handful of tracks ready to follow in the near future. United over a diverse interest in various rock and punk styles, the three bandmates devloped their sound over two years to fit into the growing new wave of UK post-punk revival.
“If we had to pick a single genre, it would be punk, but we definitely don’t stick to that label”, explains Chris. “We’ve started calling our music ‘cross-punk’ instead; all of our tracks have such a different energy from one another, dipping into so many different genres. We use our array of experiences as best we can to try and come up with something genuine and original with every track. Our foundations are definitely in punk and alt-rock, but all of our songs are definitely their own”.
Full of colour and personality, the new single hides dark topics of mental health, recovery from addiction, and isolation from society within its upbeat and dance-rock style.
Listen to the single below, and stay tuned for a new music video out September 17th.
