Alt-Pop Trio Denny Tackle Depression & Fatherhood On New Single “Light My Way”
Synth-pop trio Denny have been releasing music since 2016, and despite the band’s upbeat, alt-pop style, there has been a shadow casted over the group, most specifically frontman Alexander Rollins. “I spent the first five years of Denny in a deep, dark depression that only a handful of people knew about”, he shares. “This collided with becoming a father to a tiny human named Felix not too long ago. After he was born he was diagnosed with severe hemophilia and I spent the first chunk of his life seeing him tied up to machines, bleeding through diapers, and I was scared to death about his condition, hopeless and full of fear.
For their new single “Light My Way”, Rollins, and bandmates Randon Nelson and Sully composed something that channeled a hopeful positivity brought on by good news.
“A few days before I flew to Los Angeles for some sessions, I got news that he was approved for a treatment that would drastically change his life and knew I needed to write an honest, cathartic song about my life“, continues Rollins.
“Light My Way” is my most honest depiction of my experience with depression. It’s a love letter to the people I am closest to for never giving up on me even when I wanted to give up on myself. It’s honesty about the fear I felt as a father and as a person. It’s about coming out of darkness and knowing I did not do it alone. It’s a personal reminder of where I have been and a love letter to the people that loved me then and love me still. It’s pure Denny“.
Robust instrumentation makes the strong foundation for Rollins’ theatrical vocals to soar over top, as he sings about his love for his son and his journey back into a more fulfilling life.
