Dream-Folk Act Battle Ave Share New Single “Leo” Featuring Laura Stevenson
After ending their six year hiatus in 2021 with a self-titled EP, Hudson Valley-based dream-folk act Battle Ave are returning with their first full-length in seven years, I Saw The Egg. Boasting a lush and textural 11 tracks, the band have shared the latest single from the collection, “Leo”, which features guest vocals from singer-songwriter Laura Stevenson.
Meditative loops and trickling guitar arrangements swell together for a bold and beautiful track that combines psychedelic with dreamy, ethereal folk stylings. The contrast between the raspy vocals of frontman Jesse Doherty and the velvety voice of Laura Stevenson add a raw and gripping feel to the track.
“One of the quickest songs I’ve ever written”, beings Doherty. “If I remember it correctly, I got high and started playing my roommate’s piano (I don’t really play piano) and came up with the chords and melody that became the center of the track. The entire song came together in about 30 minutes, which runs counter to my usual writing process, since I normally take years per song. When we recorded it, we played it too fast, so we took the entire track and slowed it down by about 15bpm before I recorded vocals. I think it gives it this hazy, muted feeling, like it’s been dipped in cough syrup. Also, working with Laura Stevenson on this was the easiest collaboration I’ve ever done.. I think she sent me 3 different takes, and they were all so good I just used all of them. Her voice adds a bit of clarity to the track”.
Accompanying the single is the equally stimulating visualizer that brings together vintage colour tones and archival footage for a grab bag of visuals.
