Rising Montreal Artist Magi Merlin Drops New Single & Video “Free Grillz”
Following the releases of her 3 EPs and their respective singles, Montreal artist Magi Merlin released her new single and music video “Free Grillz”.
Produced by longtime collaborator Funkywhat, ‘Free Grillz’ finds Magi’s vocals gliding over a percussion driven track, filled with hi-hats and tectonic snares, and a strong bassline tying it all together. Reminiscent of 90’s house, drum and bass and acid-flecked hip-hop, the latest single is a departure from Magi Merlin’s previous releases – it’s a track that playfully aspires to the tropes of rap fame while also starkly reflecting on the realities of day-to-day life.
Speaking about the new single, Magi Merlin explains: “This track was originally written as a request/order from good buddy and main collaborator Funkywhat. I had never written a rap track so it was a moment of exploration. It developed and became a track that I truly feel empowered by. I call out the people who constantly mispronounce my name and I brag about big butts and money I haven’t made yet. A win-win-win for me…!“
Directed by Walid Jabri, the music video for ‘Free Grillz’ shows Magi Merlin in intimidating yet captivating light. Proudly flaunting her grillz, she embodies the daring attitude of the song and mesmerizes viewers in an array of red hues and fast-moving shots. From motorcycle rides to blowing off a boring guy and mosh pitting, she keeps us on our toes as she references the lifestyle in the lyrics in the video’s settings and transitions.
