Patrick Watson Announces New Album ‘Better in the Shade’ With Latest Single “Height Of the Feeling”
Following a number of song releases over the last two years, Patrick Watson has announced an upcoming new album dropping later this month. Better in the Shade will be his seventh studio album, set for release on April 22nd. Previewing the album release is new single “Height of the Feeling,” a song at once soft and lilting and hard hitting, showcasing Watson’s familiarity with taking a feeling and turning it into music.
Watson revealed that “Height of the Feeling” “is about using intimacy as a compass when you feel out of your skin”. As he describes, “I sometimes just have trouble without affection to ground me. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, it just is. I was lucky to be able to co-write this with Ariel Engle from La Force. She’s so much fun to work with. We just did loads of improv takes on one mic and giggled together the whole time”.
The organic nature of the writing process is echoed in the instrumental stylings of the track, creating a sound both familiar and strange, yet comforting and enticing, all at once.
Watson composes, performs and records his albums with his long-time bandmate and collaborator Mishka Stein. He and his band, who on occasion play with a full orchestra, have a number of upcoming live dates, with the promise of more to come.
