Singer-Songwriter Dan Mangan Shares Emotional Tribute To Scott Hutchinson (Frightened Rabbit) With New Single “In Your Corner (For Scott Hutchison)”
British-Columbia’s Dan Mangan’s latest release, “In Your Corner (for Scott Hutchison)”, is a heartfelt reflection on loss, loneliness and the grieving process. A direct response to the indie-rock anthem “The Woodpile” from Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit, the song is dedicated to the group’s late songwriter, Scott Hutchison.
Magan is no stranger to writing impactful lyrics – with five albums under his belt, there’s no shortage of examples to choose from. “In Your Corner (for Scott Hutchison)” spotlights Mangan’s vocals and lyrical capabilities; backed by an instrumental arrangement driven by harp and accented with piano, synth and bass, the probing lyrics taking the forefront. As the track grapples with sudden departure, feelings of loneliness and the unity that can result, Mangan directly answers a question posed by Hutchison in “The Woodpile”. With the lines ‘Leave a light on when it’s bad / We will congregate and make a plan / We’ll be in your corner’ Mangan is replying to the question, ‘Will you come back to my corner? / Spent too long alone tonight’.
On his connection to Hutchison and how his passing affected him, Mangan shares: “We’d only met once but Scott’s passing eviscerated me. He was my age and very close with several dear friends of mine. Either he couldn’t see how deeply he was loved by the world, or he didn’t feel worthy of it. How come he could bring joy to so many people but not to himself? I remember weeping as I poured cereal for my boys that morning. This song came very quickly in the days that followed.”
In the YouTube lyric video description, Mangan shares that “In Your Corner (for Scott Hutchison)” is ‘for Scott, who made tiny changes… and for anybody at all who’s spent too long alone.’
