PREMIERE: Toronto Alt-Country Artist Meredith Lazowski Shares Slow-Burning Single “Ain’t Too Late” From Upcoming Debut Full-Length ‘Other Way Home’
Having spent the last few years of her career as a digital product designer, Toronto alt-country artist Meredith Lazowski has stepped back into her musical roots as a songwriter for her upcoming debut full-length Other Way Home. Due June 17th, the 10-track collection is an amalgamation of the last handful of years as she discovered her place within the world and re-ignited her passion for music.
“I am back from a moment in time where certain aspects of creativity were missing for me,” says Meredith. “For many years now, there has been a yearning and a draw toward something, and a certain emptiness in the creative aspects of my life. I am not quite sure how I got there, but I knew something needed to change, and I needed to find my way back to where I wanted to be – ‘home.’ I feel that with this album I am back to my creative home, exploring the resonating glimpses of time and space. There are many meanings of the word ‘home’; sometimes it is just a moment in time, sometimes it is an emotional space between two people, and sometimes it is just the landscape of the world around us. There are many ways to get ‘home’ – but the important part is just trying your best to navigate your way there.”
Having grown up in a musical household filled with guitars and pianos, Lazowski has always dreamed of fine-tuning her songs and heading into the studio. Her upcoming album is a nod to both her desire to fulfill her creative dreams, and to her upbringing surrounded by encouraging musical discovery.
Now onto the sixth cut from the record, Meredith has shared “Ain’t Too Late”, as she explores the dimensions and complications of timelines in both friendships and relationships. “Sometimes timing just does not line up, and it is important to make the tough decision of moving forward. I think that as the years progress, timing has become an important life factor to me. I don’t think it was something I would consciously regularly reflect on as a kid or in my earlier adulthood.” explains Lazowski. This song was written in Meredith’s later 20s, one of the newer songs that was included on the album.
The soulful slow-burner features a sparse but carefully crafted arrangement featuring solos by Miranda Mulholland on violin and Burke Carroll on pedal steel guitar. Recorded at Union Sound in Toronto, Lazowski teamed up with producer/JUNO award-winning artist Justin Rutledge and recording engineer Chris Stringer on the track along with the rest of the forthcoming album, “I was really pleased with the studio production of “Ain’t Too Late”. The sadness of the lyrics is mirrored by the soulful instrumentals of the steel guitar and violin. Easy to shed a tear with this one!”
Her patient and soulful vocals balance effortlessly against the mournful instrumentation, in line with the likes of Fortunate Ones, and the quiet strength of Julia Stone, as Meredith poetically sings “You ain’t too late / But I ain’t got time” with each chorus.
