PREMIERE: Brooklyn Indie R&B Artist dilip Looks Back To A Past Relationship On Dreamy New Single “Pretend”
Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter/producer dilip has returned with his first single of 2022, “Pretend”. With summer only an inch away, the indie R&B artist relives a summer romance with an ex, turning fond memories and nostalgia into dreamy bedroom pop-tinged soundscapes.
“I wrote this song after an unexpected breakup”, dilip shares. “I balanced my weightier emotions in the hook (conversations end / my heart left on read / was it all pretend) with a lighter, upbeat vibe that reflects my nostalgia for the happier memories with my ex during the summer we started dating. I recorded a demo, debuted the song at a sold-out show at The Delancey in NYC to lots of positive feedback, and then teamed up with Mike Mroz (producer for Hadji Gaviota and other indie artists) to finish the song”.
Incorporating elements from some of his favourite artists including Frank Ocean, Cautious Clay, Mac Ayres, and Daniel Caesar, the emerging artist balances familiar with personal on his new single. Glossy guitar melodies and Pitch Perfect 2-worthy harmonies (a film he was a cameo in during his days with South Asian boy band Penn Masala) come together to elevate his diary-like storytelling.
