Toronto Alt-Rock Group John’s Cottage Lead Their Debut Album ‘Big & Tall’ With New Single “Holy Smokes”
Comprised of Humber College music alumni, Toronto-based alternative rock group John’s Cottage put out their debut album Big & Tall back in July. Reaching a new milestone for the four-piece, the upcoming collection showcases the band’s focused sound and direction, incorporating elements of midwest-emo, math rock, and punky alt-rock.
Leading the way is “Holy Smokes”, an emo-rock tune focused on the anxious insecurities within friendships.
“’Holy Smokes’ reveals a harsh reality in this note-to-self style track”, frontman Max Metcalf shares. “Isolation sets in when you realize your friends are no better than your enemies. Anxious thoughts are portrayed through unrelenting drums and guitars, driven by angst-possessed vocals, blending Midwest Emo harmony and Punk intensity”.
Foreshadowing the anxious-20-something theme of the record, “Holy Smokes” is a compelling first look inside the upcoming group’s mind. Nostalgic emo-rock sounds of their predecessors Jimmy Eat World, Grandaddy, and American Football come through while giving their own thoughts and gritty vocals to the mix.
