Pop Punk Group The Wonder Years share New Single “Old Friends Like Lost Teeth” From Upcoming LP ‘The Hum Goes On Forever’
With their upcoming album coming later this month, The Wonder Years have shared another single to give a glimpse into The Hum Goes On Forever. “Old Friends Like Lost Teeth” was released alongside a music video directed by Benjamin Lieber.
A gut wrenching piece about loss, highlighted in the push-and-pull structure, the track sees vocalist Dan Campbell reflecting on another friend gone too soon. “As much as I try not to dwell on loss, I can’t help myself from thinking about it, writing about it, singing about it,” Campbell explains. “This is a song for another friend who passed too soon and about how I wish I could stop myself from opening the sutures, about how I know it’ll be painful to play live, and how powerless I am to do anything else.”
As the verses crash into the chorus, listeners are confronted with emotionally charged, reflective lyrics. The chorus’s opening lines – ‘I wanna build, wanna build you back from memory / Something that can stay, that can stay here when you go’ – bring to life the loss at the heart of the song that Campbell is exploring. Coupled with the video that features the person in the ski mask referenced in the opening verses, changing in front of viewers eyes, the fragmented experience of memory comes through and amplifies the lyrics.
The Hum Goes On Forever, The Wonder Years’ seventh studio album, is set for release on September 23rd.
