Emo Rock Veterans Pohgoh Share Latest Single “Hammer” From Upcoming LP ‘du und ich’
Formed in 1994, Tampa-based emo rock group Pohgoh cut their teeth in the 90’s DIY/indie underground, only to hang it up three years later, leaving behind a sole, posthumous full-length, In Memory of Bab. While the members – Susie Ulrey (vocals/guitar), Matt Slate (guitar), Keith Ulrey (drums) and new bassist Brian Roberts (of Hankshaw) – found success through different gigs and the sort, they rejoined forces in 2016.
Back once more, the group are slated to release their third album du und ich (“you and I” in German) via Spartan Records on November 4th. From the release is their new single “Hammer”. A personal account of frontwoman Susie Ulrey’s experience dealing with depression, MS, and their compounding effects during COVID, the new single bears a heavy weight.
“I’ve dealt with depression in varying degrees since my diagnosis (of MS) in 2001 and hit a new low during the beginning of COVID, especially after losing my job”, Ulrey shares. “The rug was pulled out from under us, along with everyone else. The stress and anxiety of life in general forced its hand and my disease progressed. It’s a loop: MS begets depression and anxiety which then causes progression. Wash, rinse and repeat”.
The heaviness of the song’s subject matter is contrasted by Ulrey’s soft vocals, lined furthermore with the iconic glossy emo guitar riffs that eventually collide together for a full-frame rock anthem.
