PREMIERE: Singer-Songwriter Claire Coupland Flexes Her Narrative Style On New Single “1000 Miles From A Dream”
For Canadian singer-songwriter Claire Coupland, the worlds of jazz and folk are a pair meant to be, merging the two effortlessly with her crisp croon overtop slick guitar lines as she paints vivid pictures with her lyricism in true folk tradition. Lifted from her upcoming sophomore album New Light, due in early 2023, Coupland has shared her second single “1000 Miles From A Dream”, a lush fictional interpretation of a woman in an unhappy and abusive marriage who finds her way to a better life.
Written during the pandemic, the time from apart from the rest of the world ushered in a period of reflection for Claire, and her creative focus shifted to complete songs that had laid dormant in her discography. Themes of belonging, homesickness, painful goodbyes, and hesitant optimism lead the way into this new collection of songs.
As for its latest teaser, “1000 Miles From A Dream” bridges together the steady hands of jazz with its bluesy guitar riffs, with an unabashed folk presence that rings from Claire’s vocal performance. Reminiscent of her hero Joni Mitchell, the melting of genres with a compelling vocal performance at the helm makes for a hypnotic listening experience as she gives her protagonist the will to move out of the darkness.
Riddled with conflicting emotions, this evocative mini movie unravels the complicated nature of her thoughts, women’s roles in society, and discovering the power within to swim against the current and change her life, with Claire describing it as “a powerful and driving song with a laid-back and intentional groove”.
Recorded in Los Angeles with JUNO award-winning musician and producer Sam Weber, “1000 Miles From A Dream” lets the breezy qualities of its birthplace into its gentle demeanor.
