PREMIERE: Toronto Retro Soul Artist Claire Davis Shares Break-Up Single “Long Gone”
Heartbreak is a tale as old as time, with artists using the pain to fuel their music, and blues and R&B have been champions of the break-up anthem with their classic sound and lyric-driven performances. Toronto-based retro soul artist Claire Davis is keeping the tradition alive on her new single “Long Gone”, as she channels the likes of Etta James, and Sharon Jones for a vintage tribute that brings old school to the modern day. Having performed as a background vocalist for the likes of Martha Reeves, Sharon Jones, Jully Black, and emerging artists, Davis has found her space as an artist, and her confidence shows both lyrically and musically.
With a performance fit for smoke-filled jazz lounges and a spotlight, “Long Gone” showcases Davis’ powerhouse vocal abilities, letting her message come across “crystal clear”. Adding to the vintage style, backup singers elevate her performance, bringing the trope of having a group of friends championing her decision to life.
About the single, Davis explains, “My songwriting in the past year has been reflective of how I’ve been releasing things that are no longer serving me. Through the process of grief, I feel that the pandemic has shown me how important and limited our time is, and if we are in situations where we are not being valued, we need to walk away. “Long Gone” is about knowing we deserve better than any situation or relationship that’s diminishing our joy. I really wanted this track to reflect the “take-no-mess” attitude that I think we should all have when it comes to protecting our worth and loving ourselves. Having my three best friends singing the call- and-response background vocals on this tune is very representative for me of how my chosen family always has my back.”
Along with the new single, Davis has announced her upcoming 10-track album Get It Right will be out in 2023. The LP will display some of Claire’s most personal writing to date, consists of some of drawing from the reflective nature of the pandemic, her compositions and lyrics examine themes of self-worth, relationships, and even family dynamics.
“The concept behind the album is about knowing your worth and putting the work in”, she continues. “I think this is a poignant message for many people as we emerge from a tumultuous time. We have had the opportunity to assess what we actually want to return to, what’s truly for our benefit and for the greater good. Much of the lyrical content in the album is inspired by my own personal journey of struggling to break toxic cycles within my family and learning to forge my own path.”
“Long Gone” is the first single from her upcoming LP Get It Right set for release Spring 2023. The single will be out on all platforms on October 7th, but you can hear the song ahead of the rest of the world below:
