New Jersey Punk Act Gatherers Continue To Be An Unstoppable Force With Breathtaking Music Video For “Suffocator”

New Jersey five piece Gatherers have released a second single from their forthcoming album, ( mutilator. ). The new song packs a punch, bursting with explosive vocals and subtle electronics bubbling in the background. “suffocator” follows lead single “gift horse” and offers listeners another glimpse into what the new album as a whole will sound and feel like.

Crashing drums and distorted guitars keep the sound true to the alt-rock/punk-rock space Gatherers operate in. A strong vocal delivery from Rich Weinberger ties everything together, a seemingly effortless performance that’s filled with conviction and a clear connection to the lyrics. Speaking on the concept behind the new single, Weinberger shares, “I was inundated with boxes upon boxes of old photographs & letters left behind by my grandmother.  I spent a lot of time alone with these ephemeral little pockets from another lifetime; faces of strangers, intimate correspondences, telephone books, old brochures, film slides, etc. It was quite a voyeuristic experience that gave me nostalgia for a time I was not alive for. ‘suffocator’ is thematically opaque but meant to feel bittersweet. It’s looking into a room one last time before shutting the door forever.

Since forming in 2011, Gatherers has continually refused to succumb to convention and expectations. The upcoming album marks something of a turning point for the band – after releasing 2015’s Quiet World and 2018’s We Are Alive Beyond Repair, they put out the single “Sick, Sad Heart” in April 2019 before parting ways with their label. The band have since found a new freedom to explore every avenue and create exactly what they wanted, showcased through “suffocator”. “This is the first time in two albums that we were really just able to take our time with it, and do and hear what we wanted on a record,” says guitarist Anthony Gesa.

( mutilator. ) will be the band’s fourth full length release, and is set for release on November 18th via No Sleep Records.
