Vancouver Post-Punks Aversions Share New Single “New Whip”
Vancouver post-punk trio Aversions have shared their new single “New Whip”. After dropping their EP Sharp Left Turns back in January, the group have closed off the year with a searing offering about the viscous cycle of toxic masculinity.
About the song, the band share, “From cradle to grave, the song explores how the impact of generational thinking shapes the people we become, and the beliefs and opinions we’ll go to any lengths to enforce. Inspired by Nate Powell’s visual essay “About Face,” “New Whip” shines a light on how toxic masculinity is passed down like a gene, as expressed by a man’s love of his new truck–a seemingly innocuous object that holds a darker purpose“.
Drawing strong comparisons to the UK post-punk revival scene, “New Whip” balances stoic poetic verses and blistering full-band arrangements. Bands like Squid, Shame, and pioneers such as Pavement come to mind as Aversions incorporate social commentary into their visceral, post-punk sound.
