PREMIERE: Brooklyn Singer-Songwriter Chris Cubeta Announces Latest Album ‘APOE’ With Thundering New Single “Architect”
Brooklyn singer-songwriter Chris Cubeta has been involved in the New York City music scene for over 20 years as a musician and co-owner of Studio G Brooklyn, one of NYC’s largest recording studios. While his previous solo album was released back in 2011, Cubeta is excited to announce his forthcoming album APOE is set for April 7th, named after the genotype implicated in Alzheimer’s disease.
And while in theory, it is an exciting release for Cubeta as he returns to his roots as a recording artist, it is also something that intrinsically he had to make. Years of living with undiagnosed depression, compounded with a growing awareness of human life’s relationship to memory and existence, and then blurred together with the need to come to terms with his mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. “The last 5 or so years, I’ve been in therapy almost every week and a lot of the time I spent was focused on writing music and where it comes from,” he shares. “I’m confronting things about my childhood that have led me to be the person I am, and conversely discovering a lot about the person I want to be.”
Following his recent single “Vicious”, Chris has unveiled his latest addition, “Architect”. Boasting an anthemic rock core, the new single contributes to the album’s commanding qualities, as more philosophical undertones come out through the lyricism. Cubeta began writing “Architect” from the ground up, with a drum-forward rhythm driving the song forward. The distorted guitars and fuzz-filled layers were slowly added, building on top of one another, providing a deeper, tangible connection to its title “Architect”; “I’ve always liked the word”, Chris shares.
About the sonic make-up of the track he continues, “This is another song that started with the rhythmic element. The main drums are a loop of me playing, with additional drums layered on top throughout the piece. As I write this, I’m realizing that a lot of this record was just me reacting viscerally to recording different elements and then building on top of them. Being a studio rat, I need to be able to layer sounds in order to get inspired to write.”
Visceral and dense, “Architect” finds a balance between rhythmic and hypnotizing, while still remaining melodic and grandiose. The song’s sonic powers provide a bridge to its more introspective and reflective foundation, as Cubeta finds peace amongst the chaos of both sound and contemplation. “This record was necessary because I truly feel best when I’m writing and recording material that means something to me,” shares Cubeta. “The craft of songwriting and music-making is a way for me to make something that makes some sense but is also still abstract. I guess my hope is that the writing and the recordings combine to make sense to someone else.”
