Japanese-American Hip-Hop Artist Fox Spirit Shares Reflects On History With New Single “Snow Moon Flower”
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Tokyo, Japanese-American hip-hop artist Atsu Nakayama has been influenced by both cultures as an artist. Since beginning his beginning his recording career in 2020 while living in Liverpool, Atsu has shared his latest single “Snow Moon Flower”. Performing under the moniker Fox Spirit, Atsu delves into his bicultural heritage, exploring the treatment of Japanese-Americans in internment camps and the retrospective view of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan.
About the song, Atsu shares, “The song was written in 2020. It was the 75th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing. I questioned my stance on the war. Japan’s inhumane treatment towards other Asian countries, or the attack on Pearl Harbor. But still, can you say that the rain was justified?“
Influenced by the likes of Nas and Kendrick Lamar, there’s a bedroom-rap approach to the production and humble tone to his delivery that adds to its reflective poise.
