Fast-Rising Brighton Post-Punk Act Youth Sector Share New Single “Benign Fire In A Small Room” From Upcoming EP ‘Quarrels’

Brighton-based post-punk act Youth Sector have not slowed down since first stepping into the music scene back in 2018. With a handful of singles and EPs already under their belt, alongside some international tour stops, the band continue to make a commanding presence with their golden-era post-punk style.

With their latest EP Quarrels set for release June 16th via Dance to the Radio, Youth Sector have shared its lead single “Benign Fire In A Small Room”.

Balancing catchy riffs and modern day challenges, the new single is a groove-forward offer that delves into the confusion of adult life and the contrasting day-to-day emotions.

Speaking about ‘Benign Fire In A Small Room’, Youth Sector said: “This feels like our most mature offering so far and is my personal favourite on the EP. I had this core image of a person being totally on fire but being the last to know or care about it; I loved it as a metaphor for trying to drudge through life even as things are falling apart for you and everyone can see it. But to be honest I had so much fun just taking that image at face value and running with it for a full 3 minutes – following this guy to work as he tries to get through a day without drawing attention to the fact he’s on fire, and slowly, reluctantly acknowledging it: “It appears that I’m on fire but I think it will go out soon”.

Nods to The Strokes both sonically and lyrically come through on the new track, as the band continue to polish and evolve their sound with their latest release.

Speaking about the Quarrels EP, they continue: “We recorded Quarrels in Leeds which is quickly becoming a bit of a second hometown for us; we worked with producer Matt Peel for the first time which was a delight – working with Matt taught us to rethink our approach to recording in a lot of really positive ways.

Alongside our amazing friend and artist Annie Mackinnon (who did all the artwork) we settled on the medieval theme for the artwork/EP title. It felt appropriate because the themes of the EP songs portray such a regressive, post-Brexit reflection of British life and society that at this moment in time it can feel a little like we’ve moved backwards to a very hostile, brutal country that’s totally out of step with modern aspirations. Not to mention it was also loads of fun commissioning a painting of Nick T being literally murdered by the other band members and an assortment of medieval beasts. The songs feel stronger and more decisive stylistically and lyrically than anything we’ve done before and we’re really proud of the material.”
